ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL HOSPITAL OFFERS ADVANCED VASCULAR SURGERY SERVICES

(FEBRUARY 8, 2010) Far Rockaway, NY - - - St. John's Episcopal Hospital has a new vascular surgeon on the surgery staff, Fen Qin, MD. Dr. Qin performs minimally invasive endovascular techniques, along with traditional, open vascular operations, offering newer, less risky procedures for those who need them. Now patients who may have been otherwise too ill, elderly or hesitant to undergo open procedures with general anesthesia have many vascular options available to them. He is a welcome addition to the Hospital's vascular surgery, which includes Rulx Dupiton, MD.

"We are very proud to offer additional vascular surgery services to the community. Because of the high rates of heart disease and diabetes in our community, vascular surgery can greatly help, restoring function and saving lives," says John Gupta, Chief Executive Officer. "Even more significantly, with a physician of Dr. Qin's caliber, rich experience, and expertise, patients can benefit from the reduced recovery time offered by endovascular surgery." Dr, Qin works closely with the Hospital's Wound Care Center and Hemodialysis Center.

Vascular diseases involve blood vessels, the arteries and veins anywhere in the body. As people age, arteries tend to thicken with a build-up of plaque and cholesterol, get stiffer and narrow. When blood flow is restricted, vascular diseases, like carotid artery disease, can lead to stroke; peripheral arterial disease can lead to problems walking and other problems; and abdominal aortic aneurysms, affecting the body's largest artery, can result in death if not treated early.

Endovascular surgery is an innovative, less invasive procedure used to treat problems affecting the blood vessels. It provides an alternative to open surgery, In endovascular surgery, the surgeon uses x-rays and other advanced imaging techniques, to guide small tubes and devices through a small incision in the groin to the affected blood vessels. Smaller incisions mean less pain, shorter hospital stays and reduced recovery time.

The full range of vascular surgery offerings of Dr. Qin's includes:

  • Abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repairs.
  • Carotid artery disease, including sophisticated stenting procedures.
  • Stroke prevention and treatment of risk factors.
  • Limb salvage and other treatments of peripheral vascular disease.
  • Hemodialysis access. Since Dr. Qin’s arrival, the Hospital's fistula access rate (the preferred access) is above national standards.
  • Varicose veins and venous ulcerations.

Vascular diseases, like carotid artery disease, can also lead to stroke. St. John's is a designated stroke center and offers the medical and technical expertise that meet New York State's latest protocols.

Dr. Qin received his medical degree from Medical Center of Fudan University in China. He completed his American residencies in general surgery at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Centers, New York Medical College and University of South Alabama School of Medicine. He also did his fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. He has conducted extensive research and published numerous papers, chapters and posters, some of them focusing on endovascular aneurysm repair.

With privileges at Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Qin is able to offer St. John's patients access to many advanced procedures and follow-up back at St. John's without losing continuity.
