CPE Program Details

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is professional education for ministry. It brings theological students, ordained clergy, members of religious orders and qualified laypersons into supervised encounters with "living human documents." This encourages each student to develop: their pastoral identity, interpersonal competence and spirituality; the skills of pastoral assessment, interprofessional collaboration, group leadership, pastoral care and counseling; and pastoral theological reflection.
CPE programs function at three levels: Basic, Advanced, and Supervisor-In-Training. Within this graded, competency-based curriculum, students provide ministry under supervision. Supervision is the heart of the learning process, functioning through multiple structures of responsibility and reflection.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) started in the 1920's in a mental hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, largely through the work of Anton T. Boisen and Richard C. Cabot. In addition to mental hospitals, CPE is presently offered in a variety of other clinical settings that include full service hospitals, social service agencies, prisons, university campuses, medical schools, parishes, and military establishments.

CPE is also, now, international in scope. Although begun in North America (in the United States and soon thereafter in Canada) CPE took root during post-World War II years in Northern Europe, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Africa and South America.

The Training Program

The training center offers Generic CPE, and Supervisory levels of Clinical Pastoral Education.

The Basic CPE Program

Basic CPE is professional education for ministry that focuses on the formation of one's identity as a pastoral care giver and the development of basic pastoral care abilities.

The Advanced CPE Program

Advanced CPE is continuing clinical education. It is for those who have achieved a heightened level of personal awareness, pastoral formation and professional development, and who desire continuous education in ministry and pastoral care specialization. Professional competency, in such areas as chaplaincy, pastoral counseling, congregational ministry, ministry to specific age groups and ministry to special life situations, and pastoral supervision in non-CPE ministry settings, is the focus. Students exercise greater autonomy, provide more input to their CPE curriculum, and function more independently as chaplains.

Specialization offerings in pastoral care include:

  • Addictions & Substance Abuse
  • Group Leadership
  • Hospice
  • Gerontology Pastoral Care
  • Pastoral Counseling Research
  • Pastoral Supervision Mental Health
  • Pastoral Care Management
  • Pastoral Care Administration

While pastoral care is the focus of the Advance CPE specialization, the curriculum in several of the specializations listed incorporates partial credentialing requirements for licensing or certification by professional organizations.

The Supervisory CPE Program

Supervisory CPE is for those who demonstrate personal, theological and professional competence and who desire to learn the craft of supervising and teaching clinical pastoral education through development of competence in the areas of personal growth, the CPE process, individual supervision, group supervision, program management, and personal and professional integration of theology, including their identity as a clinical pastoral educator.

Distinctive Features

A Diverse Clinical Context for Education

There are two hospitals, two nursing homes, several primary care centers, and numerous outpatient clinics. The variety of healthcare facilities in a single CPE campus provides a wide choice to students for clinical assignments and areas of specialization.

Scope of Clinical Contexts

Every branch and specialty of medicine is found in the combined health care facilities available to this CPE Center, offering students different experiences and crisis situations for pastoral ministry.

Diversity

The wide variety of patient/resident populations served by the CPE program provides a rich diversity in the following areas:

  • Cultural
  • Economic
  • Religious
  • Geographic
  • Ethnic
  • Social

The pastoral contexts offered by the program traverse both inner-city and urban settings. Four of the clinical sites are located in the inner-city/urban setting. The contrast between inner-city and urban settings lifts class differences and justice issues, socially and economically. Several of the CPE Center's clinical sites are situated within minutes of Kennedy International Airport, an eastern gateway in America to the world. The populations of Kings, Queens, and Nassau counties represent a microcosm of the nations of the world. Within the borders there are diverse ethnic communities including: Russian, Italian, Chinese, Greek, Africans, Indian, Egyptian, Hispanic, Caribbean Islander and African-American. With pride, they preserve, express and share their cultural, religious, and ethnic heritages.

Such diversity harbors potent experiences and lessons in pastoral care for students at this CPE Center.

Partnership With A Seminary

An affiliation with the George Mercer, Jr. School of Theology provides the proper context for Clinical Pastoral Education - theological and ministerial scholarship! EHS-CPE and the George Mercer, Jr. School of Theology bring enviable resources to the CPE interns. The seminary facilities and library, as well as faculty and other seminary resources, are available to CPE students and to the EHS-CPE Program.

Linkage to the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island

The CPE Center is a diocesan CPE program of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Long Island. Candidates for ordination in the Diocese are required to complete no less than one unit of CPE. This is the only Episcopal diocese in the country that has its own CPE Program.

About EHS

Episcopal Health Services (EHS) traces its roots almost 150 years back to the Church Charity Foundation which was founded on February 6, 1851 "for aged indigent persons and for the welfare of orphans, half orphans, and other destitute children." Today, EHS is one of the largest healthcare organization in New York State, offering state-of-the-art medical services, nursing homes, and senior housing in the counties of Brooklyn, Queens, and Nassau on Long Island.

EHS is an arm of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, reaching out beyond its parishes to serve all God's people, regardless of their religious affiliation. EHS is an integral part of the ministry of the Diocese. The Bishop, clergy and their parishioners serve on boards, committees, and task forces of EHS. This commitment to service, and to the education of clergy from a holistic perspective has led to the establishment of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program.

Bishop Orris G. Walker, Jr., President of the Board of Managers, encapsulates the spirit and soul of EHS: "The gesture of the outstretched arms to embrace the frail and elderly, the weak and suffering and those who are dying is a service which only God can perform successfully. We are God's outstretched arms of love, vehicles of empowerment and support, enabling others to heal, to become whole once again or return to God after completing their journeys here on earth.

"For us to continue to serve the needs of our residents and patients effectively, professionally and meaningfully, we must continue to uphold standards and meet the spiritual and physical needs of everyone who comes to our doors, not just those of a particular community, faith or socio-economic group."

Clearly high standards, broad reach, and excellence in the quality of care and ministry to the whole person are the aims that EHS and the Diocese seek to maintain. No less is expected of its Clinical Pastoral Education Program.
