Rev. Dr. C. Broderick Joins St. John's Episcopal Hospital as Vice President, Pastoral Care

JANUARY 25, 2007 (Far Rockaway, NY) - - - The Rev. Dr. Cecily P. Broderick y Guerra has been appointed to the position of Vice President of Pastoral Care for Episcopal Health Services, Inc. Among her many responsibilities are administering the chaplaincy and clinical pastoral education programs at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, Interfaith Medical Center, and the Bishop MacLean and Hucles Nursing Homes.

Rev. Dr. Broderick said, “I was honored and delighted to accept Bishop Walker’s (President and Chairman, Episcopal Health Services) invitation to serve Episcopal Health Services. I look forward to working with the dedicated and diverse chaplains and pastoral care trainees in our facilities. My aim is to help St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, the Bishop MacLean Nursing Home, and other Episcopal Health Service facilities deliver the highest quality of pastoral care to patients and staff because the spiritual well-being of caregivers and patients is an essential component of healthcare delivery.”

She has served as an ordained minister in the Episcopal Church for 20 years. Previously the Rev. Dr. Broderick served as the Priest-in-Charge at St. Philip’s Church, Harlem, NY, the second oldest Black church in the Episcopal Church. Before that she was the rector at St. John’s Church in Hempstead, NY. She has also served as Canon for Pastoral Work at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in NY, NY.

The Rev. Dr. Broderick is very active professionally in a number of associations including: the Advisory Committee to the General Theological Seminary’s Center for Spirituality; the Commission on Ministry for the Diocese of Long Island; and as a Board member of Habitat for Humanity in New York City. She is a member of The Black Caucus, an organization for clergy of African descent in the Diocese of Long Island; RSAC, an interfaith organization for lay and ordained women; and the Union of Black Episcopalians.

The Rev. Dr. Broderick received her Doctor of Ministry degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary, CA, and her Master of Divinity degree from Yale/Berkeley Divinity School, CT, where she received the Mercer Preaching Prize.

St. John’s is a place of spiritual care as well as physical healing. A team of multi-denominational clergy members hold daily Christian worship services at 11:30 am on Mondays through Fridays which are broadcast throughout the Hospital on the inhouse television network. In addition to a a Christian Chapel, there is a Jewish Prayer Room and both are available to visitors 24 hours a day. A Sabbath elevator and kosher dairy kitchen are provided. The Clinical Pastoral Education Program draws clergy and laity from around the world and has helped establish programs in Malaysia and Italy. The Department of Pastoral Care also offers the St. John’s Bereavement Center that provides programs for children, teens and adults coming to terms with significant losses.
