St.
John's Episcopal Hospital South Shore is a 332-bed community teaching hospital
serving Far Rockaway and the Five Towns, an area that is densely populated,
culturally and economically diverse, and medically underserved. An 11-story
facility, St. John's is also connected via a covered overhead walkway to
the 163-bed Bishop Charles Waldo MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home.
Accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Inc. and the American Osteopathic Association, this voluntary hospital has one of the finest graduate medical education programs in the metropolitan area. Affiliated with the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, St. John's is currently training interns and residents in a number of specialties. St. John's diagnostic and treatment capabilities have been significantly upgraded recently, resulting in enhanced cardiac diagnostic, monitoring, and treatment services. The appointment of several new members to the medical staff has enhanced medical and surgical offerings in otolaryngology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiology, and nuclear medicine. The hospital is further distinguished as the only facility on the Rockaway Peninsula to provide comprehensive 24-hour obstetrics/gynecology services. It is also the referral hospital for Episcopal Health Services' newest affiliates, the MedPort primary care centers in Arverne and Rockaway Beach. As a member of the Episcopal Health Services network, St. John's participates in HealthFirst, Inc.; offers multi denominational pastoral care and clinical pastoral training; provides community outreach and health education services supported, in part, by the United Hospital Fund; and participates in community events, screenings, and referrals. St. John's Episcopal Hospital South Shore is positioning itself to be more responsive to the community, continuing to fulfill the hopes of its founders, and the progressive, changing needs of the people it services.
