Family Resource Center

Growth in recognition of the positive impact of advocacy on mental health policy and treatment has brought a new group of programs throughout New York City. In 2010, a citywide revitalization of the family mental health support system created nine new Family Resource Centers ready to help families with children who have mental health diagnoses and mental health needs. The Family Resource Center of Eastern Queens is staffed with professionally trained family and youth advocates. Advocates have a unique perspective of families' needs based on their own concerns and struggles associated with mental illness in their family. They know the difficulties with finding and getting the treatments, education and care options necessary.

"I have been there, I know the frustration, pain, confusion and tears my whole family experienced when trying to get the services my son needed. You cannot do this alone," said Kathy Gardini, Manager of the Family Resource Center - Eastern Queens.

"Unless you have been there, you can't truly understand the pain and fear and sometimes anger we feel, yes anger, but together we can get through it," commented Lorraine Jacobs, Director of Family Resource Center – Western Queens.

The new Family Resource Centers are ready to provide a wide range of assistance and programs. They help make referrals to treatment and serve as an important support for a family as well as treatment providers. And it is not just the child with a diagnosis that needs help: the caregiver and family members also need support and resources.
