MRI

St. John's Episcopal Hospital offers state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services. The hospital's MRI unit offers a stronger, high-field magnet that provides improved image quality with additional capabilities for neurological, musculoskeletal, orthopedic and vascular exams.

MRI exams do not use any X-rays or other types of potentially harmful ionizing radiation. Instead, they use radio waves and a powerful magnetic field to acquire highly detailed images of your body.

As with any diagnostic imaging device, the most accurate images are taken when you remain perfectly still. To help ensure this, our MRI features a large open bore and the quietest operation, designed to minimize any anxiety you may anticipate or experience during your exam. Your comfort, combined with the latest exam techniques and our state-of-the-art imaging technology, will help your physician get the high-quality images he or she needs to provide the most accurate diagnosis and evaluation of your condition.

Before Your Exam

Although no special preparations are required, following are some tips to prepare for your exam.

  • You may eat and drink normally unless otherwise directed: however, you should limit your intake of caffeine.
  • Women should refrain from wearing eye shadow or mascara, which can reduce image quality.
  • If you have an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker or aneurysm clip, bring the medical card that identifies it to your exam.
  • You will be asked to remove all jewelry and any metal objects prior to your exam.

The Day of Your Exam

Typical MRI exams take from 15-45 minutes to complete, depending on the type and number of sequences performed. To help capture accurate images for your physician, it is important that you remain as still as possible during your exam. You will be able to communicate with the technologist at any time by using the intercom. Headphones and music are available during the exam for greater comfort.

The technologist may place an MR coil around the part of your body that is being scanned.

Unless your physician directs otherwise, you may resume normal activities immediately after the exam.
