Community Outreach

The Bishop Charles Waldo MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home is a solid member of the Rockaway community. This old and prestigious neighborhood is undergoing a renaissance. It is an example of the "melting pot" as the neighborhood is comprised of African Americans, Irish, Jewish, Latinos, Russians and other ethnic groups. It is proud of its' churches, synagogues and mosques which are actively involved in this ethnically diverse neighborhood.

The community is currently undergoing a process of revitalization, as single family homes are being built and block associations meet regularly. Bishop MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home is an active participant in this process of community involvement. We serve as a work training site for evelopmentally disabled adults, providing valuable experience to prepare these adults to re-enter the work force.

We provide work study programs for special needs students from the Five Towns School System and during the summer months participate in the Summer Youth Employment Program enabling local high school students to gain life experience as well as earn money. Bishop MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home hosts local politicians who speak to our residents on current community issues. Our residents participate in the political system through voting via absentee ballots.

The nursing home staff lives in the neighborhood and Bishop MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home supports the participation of local Police and Fire Departments. Officers at the 10Ist. Precinct are very involved, reassuring residents about neighborhood security and assisting the staff committee with disaster planning.

Episcopal Health Services offers an Interfaith Clinical Pastoral Edncation (CPE) program at Bishop MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home that trains theology students in pastoral care of the sick and needy. Accredited by the College of Pastoral Supervision Inc. and Psychology, the CPE training center grants credit for successful completion of the program to students registered with this association.

Bishop MacLean is also proud to be part of several community development programs designed to assist educationally, emotionally, and physically disabled children and young adults. These programs are beneficial to our residents and allow Bishop MacLean Nursing Home
to offer support to our surrounding community.
