Medical and Nursing
Care
Each resident can rely on 24-hour nursing care delivered
by qualified health-care professionals. In addition to
a unit physician on each of the six floors, there is
a team of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses,
and Certified Nursing Assistants serving on every unit.
One unit is specially designed for residents with Alzheimer's
Disease. Professional nurses and other care-givers make
this a comfortable place for residents who require around-theclock
care.
Medical diagnosis and treatment is tailored to meet
our residents' needs, some of which are culturally
specific to the African American and Hispanic communities
we serve. Physicians specialize in treating chronic
heart disease, diabetes as well as specific conditions
such as sickle cell anemia. Our links to hospitals
and clinics within Episcopal Health Services allow
us to call on physicians and medical experts along
with pharmaceutical services 24 hours a day.
It is often said that the quality of nursing care
defines the quality of life for nursing home residents.
At Bishop Hucles, we are proud of our nursing staff,
many of whom have been honored for their compassion
and clinical excellence.
Pastoral Care
At Bishop Henry B. Hucles Episcopal Nursing Home, we
believe that the spiritual health of every resident
is as important as their physical health and well-being.
For this reason, pastoral care is an essential part
of the care offered at our facility, tailored to
the individual needs of each resident. A beautiful
on-site chapel offers Episcopal mass twice a week,
and a Roman Catholic mass once a month. In addition,
Protestant programs are given on Sunday evenings
in each of the units. Reverend Bernice Coleman, our
resident chaplain, not only ministers to the special
needs of each resident, but also acts as their advocate,
bringing any concerns or anxieties to the attention
of the administrative staff. Mother Coleman understands
that caring for the care-givers is a vital part of
a successful care program, and is equally attentive
to the spiritual needs of each staff member.
Support Services
Rounding out the total care program at Bishop
Henry B. Hucles Episcopal Nursing Home
are case managers that help a range of professionals
to ease the transition for each resident. Educated
staff offer counseling and teach outreach skills to
residents who may feel cut off from family and friends,
helping them to take advantage of new social opportunities
and activities. They also provide assistance with Medicare
and Medicaid benefits and claims, HMO or other medical
insurance problems, legal and family issues, and planning
for future needs, including wills ancl/or funeral arrangements.
Residents' social life is facilitated through a range
of activities, including shopping
and day trips, in-house musical and theater entertainment,
fashion shows, arts and
crafts, table games, and recreational contests. Friendships
are made easy through birthday celebrations, barbecues
and seasonal parties.
Above all, we believe that care-giving takes time,
along with patience and the ability to listen. Only
then do we truly know another person; only then can
we attend to his or her health needs. Our staff is
here to give that time to each and every resident.
