The Henry B. Hucles Episcopal
Nursing Home is a solid member of the community we
serve, Bedford-Stuyvesant. This prestigious neighborhood
has a good mix of African Americans, with a growing
Latino population. It is proud of its many old churches,
many of which were-and are-actively involved in the
Civil Rights movement. The surrounding neighborhood
is currently undergoing a process of revitalization,
as single family hornes are rebuilt and upgraded and
block and neighborhood associations meet regularly.
The
nursing home is an active participant in this process
of community involvement. Most recently we facilitated
the revitalization of two block associations, including
the expanded Herkimer Street Block Association, which
now meets monthly on our premises. For several years
we have sponsored an annual Health Fair, a block-wide
event with food and entertainment that is popular with
both children and their parents. Nearby hospitals provide
health screening and testing for conditions such as
diabetes and hypertension and local clinics provide
information on parenting and child health.
Most of the Nursing Home staff live in the neighborhood
and encourage the participation of local Police and
Fire Departments. Officers at the 81st Precinct are
very involved, reassuring residents about neighborhood
security and assisting the staff safety committee with
disaster planning. The Nursing Home facility provides
a meeting place for Lions Club groups in Bedford-Stuyvesant,
Stuyvesant Park, and Stuyvesant Heights. |
