St. John's Episcopal Hospital has served as a vital healthcare resource for the community since 1905. Its importance was recently underscored by the events of Superstorm Sandy and its aftermath. After the Hospital decided to keep its doors open throughout the storm, desperate residents waded through floodwaters seeking refuge in the lobby. In the days that followed, many more joined them. They were in some way in need of ongoing medical care, stranded without electricity, medical and pharmaceutical assistance, working elevators and much more. The Hospital continued to care for patients and those driven from their homes because of the flooding for another two weeks all the while operating on emergency generators. It was one of the few hospitals in New York City's Flood Zone A to withstand the storm, thanks in large part to the Hospital's very dedicated doctors, nurses and staff.
